How to Use Apollo.io Filters to Find Your Ideal Customer

Apollo.io’s search filters are one of its most powerful features. The ability to filter a database of over 275 million contacts by dozens of specific criteria allows GTM teams to build highly targeted prospect lists that match their ideal customer profile with precision. Knowing how to use these filters effectively is one of the most important GTM Operations skills.

The Most Useful Apollo Filters

Apollo offers filters across two main categories: people filters and company filters. The most useful people filters include job title, seniority level, department, and location. The most useful company filters include industry, company size by employee count, annual revenue, and technology stack. Combining people and company filters gives you a precise picture of your ideal prospect.

Using Job Title Filters Effectively

Job title filters in Apollo can be used in two ways. You can search for exact job titles or you can search for keywords that appear in job titles. Keyword searches cast a wider net and capture more variations of a role. Exact title searches are more precise but may miss relevant prospects with slightly different title conventions. Use both approaches and compare the results to find the right balance for your ICP.

Technology Stack Filters

One of Apollo’s most powerful and underused filter capabilities is the technology stack filter. This allows you to find companies that use specific tools, which can be a strong indicator of fit with your solution. If your ideal customer uses HubSpot, you can filter specifically for companies running HubSpot. This level of precision dramatically improves list quality.

Saving and Refining Your Filters

Once you find a filter combination that produces high quality results, save it as a named search in Apollo. Review and refine your saved searches regularly as your ICP evolves. Supplement your Apollo data with additional enrichment from Clay to add depth and accuracy to the contacts you identify through your filter searches.
